The situation in Flanders
In Flanders, school governing boards play a big role and are responsible for one or more schools. These boards have a lot of independence, making their own decisions on such important matters as teaching methods, philosophical approaches, curricula, timetables, and the hiring of staff. The government’s role is mostly to set the conditions for recognising a school and providing financial support. This decentralised structure gives schools the power to adjust their educational offerings to match local needs and preferences, creating a dynamic and responsive learning environment.
