Engaging schools

Educational institutions have various degrees of decision-making power in regard to their curriculum. Some can put together a school-based curriculum, while others can only follow a rigid nationwide framework. The school’s involvement in the curriculum often depends on teachers’ engagement, so your role can be vital.

How to engage schools?

  • Check the scope of change represented by every stakeholder in the school ecology. See what can be decided by the most important actors, including headmasters, individual teachers, non-teaching staff, school bodies, inspectorates and teachers’ institutions (unions, training institutions, associations).
  • Check the resources needed for change. These include finances, staff, space, physical resources and social capital.
  • Check if you can facilitate dialogue with other actors. Try collaborating with students and parents at your school, or learn from other schools.
