Chnages through cross-curricular topics
In some countries – such as Germany, Austria and Estonia – cross-curricular topics allow for the introduction of interdisciplinary content, like bioeconomy. In Austria, “Environmental education and sustainable development” is integrated into various subjects. In Poland and Austria, pedagogical experiments, which are innovative activities often long-term in nature, can be conducted. These experiments involve formalities and extra work for the teacher, and are conducted under the supervision of an academic institution. In Hungary, teachers and local communities have the freedom to organise environmental education programmes, and many local governments support such initiatives. In the Netherlands, schools offer a variety of programmes delivered outside of the curriculum, which are not subject to the same level of regulation as the curriculum, providing more flexibility.
