Experience report from the STEAM Summer School
Our colleague Sakshi Anand from University College Dublin shares her experience of participating in the STEAM Summer School, a programme that offers practical training in communicating science through the arts, with a particular focus on performance skills:
Attending the STEAM Summer School was a profoundly transformative experience. Over nine immersive days, I delved into the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through a dynamic, hands-on approach that focused on experiential learning. This intensive program, running from July 13 to 21, fostered skills in arts-based communication, boosted my confidence, and sharpened my presentation abilities. It also provided the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals while culminating in the delivery of a live STEAM event.
Our team organized an event titled “Beat the Heat,” a science-based escape room that engaged participants with innovative strategies to cope with extreme heat. This interactive event was hosted at the Valetta Science Centre and aimed to raise awareness about the effects of heatwaves using scientific principles in a fun and engaging way.
From the start, the program was designed to push boundaries and inspire creativity. Each day featured presentations from expert speakers who provided crucial background knowledge, laying the groundwork for the practical sessions that followed. These hands-on sessions were where the learning truly came alive, as we were encouraged to experiment, innovate, and immediately apply our knowledge to the creation and execution of a STEAM event.
A standout aspect of my experience was collaborating on the “Beat the Heat” escape room project, designed to educate the Maltese community about the dangers of extreme heat through interactive, science-driven activities. This project demanded strategic thinking, teamwork, and creativity, giving me deeper insight into effective science communication techniques.
The supportive environment at STEAM was another key component of its success. Facilitators were readily available, providing constant feedback and guidance, which was instrumental in building my confidence and refining my presentation skills. The specialized workshops further helped address specific challenges and enhanced my overall performance.
Ultimately, the STEAM Summer School not only strengthened my abilities and knowledge but also reignited my passion for STEAM education. It was an unforgettable journey that contributed significantly to both my personal and professional development.
